8mm,
Super8, and 16mm FILM MOVIES -
We perform digital frame-by-frame, 100%
flicker free conversions. The vividness and color saturation
of 40 year old film often looks better than 5-year-old VHS
tapes!

NOTE:
It is recommended that you use the latest FREE version
of Windows

These
samples are representative of the quality you should expect
to receive with the transfer of your film, providing your
film is in fairly good shape and has been stored properly
through the years. Each of these samples have been color
corrected to enhance the video quality. Our color correction
is provided to you at no extra charge. Please keep in mind
that the streaming video you see here is actually of lesser
quality than the video that is on a DVD. We have to keep
the files size small in order for it to download within
a respectable time frame.
UNDERSTANDING
THE ENTIRE TELECINE PROCESS
FRAME-BY-FRAME
(100% FLICKER FREE) TRANSFER
- Please do your research carefully.
Flicker-free does NOT necessarily mean "frame-by-frame".
A 5 blade or variable speed projector may eliminate the
flicker but the quality of the image is affected in every
case. The same holds true with the GOKO telecine transfer
units. They use a prism to "fade" the STROBE affect, but
the image suffers greatly and is cropped. We do not process
ANY of our 8mm film transfers with any of these "real-time"
methods.
Aside
from a muli-thousand dollar "Rank" transfer, we
use the best approach possible, which is a true frame-by-frame
process, capturing the entire image of each frame without
cropping. A highly sophisticated 3CCD camera with broadcast
quality optics captures the image of every single frame
of the film while it is STOPPED. The image is taken directly
from the face of the film, passed through the camera via
a firewire connection to a computer's hard drive as a full
frame of video. With this process the clarity and color
of the image is not compromised so the
end result, when transferred to a DVD, is absolutely
stunning. This process is only surpassed by actual film
scanning as used by Hollywood houses, known as a "Rank transfer".
However, the cost of that is in the thousands of dollars,
and it is beyond what most consumers are willing to pay.
Furthermore, a Rank transfer is reserved mostly for 35mm
movie film.
Most
film conversion transfer houses do not edit obscure footage
and do not add a music soundtrack. We also add a music
soundtrack, menus, and "video" thumbnail chapter buttons...
at no extra charge. The quality of our audio is Dolby
Digital 2.1 channel (stereo, plus a subwoofer channel).

FILM WITH SOUND: $0.25/foot
extra added to the above linear breakdown, for the
frame by frame processing of any format of
film with sound, because the sound has to be processed
a second time, capturing the sound to one of our
computers. One thing we need to remind our customers
of is that the microphones used with 8mm cameras
produced an inherent delay when the camera was first
activated to shoot a scene. The “film” began recording
the images immediately, but the audio that was recorded
to the same film strip was delayed due to the audio
circuitry required to record to the magnetic strip
on the edge of the film. This always resulted in
a short delay when the camera was activated. If
you have access to an 8mm sound projector, you will
be able to hear the same delay each time the camera
switches from the off position to record a new scene.
Therefore, the
sound then has to be "time stretched", "pitched
preserved", and "keyframed" to maintain synchronization
with the video, actually improving the quality
of the original, in preparation to be mastered to
the final DVD.

We
place chapters breaks in logical places, based on film content,
with pinpoint precision. For example, we might place a chapter
right between a Christmas scene and a backyard BBQ scene,
even if they happen to be on the same reel of film. This
way you can jump directly to the exact scene you'd
like, just like you jump to your favorite song on a CD.
We would NEVER place a chapter break 10 seconds before the
aforementioned Christmas scene ends, as might be the case
with some other studios who use a set-top DVD recorder to
perform a film transfer.
Furthermore,
we could collaborate with you to create your own commentary
track for your DVD. One single layer DVD will hold approximately
1.5 hours of your 8mm footage at high quality (> 6 Mbps)
bit rates, and one dual layer DVD will hold approximately
3 hours of your 8mm footage at high quality (> 6 Mbps)
bit rates. We can make multiple copies of the finished DVD
so other family members can enjoy it also.

35mm
SLIDES

35
mm slides provided everyone in the room an opportunity to
view all those snapshots together. Families were entertained
with the large photos as they popped up in succession on
the large screen. With a DVD player connected to a projector,
you can enjoy these same pictures on the big screen. If
you don't have a projector, watch them on your large screen
TV right from your DVD player. GrafXpress has the technology
to transfer all your slides to a DVD and add a 5.1 channel
audio track to make the viewing a little more enjoyable.
A DVD-ROM can also be created so that you can print out
your own enlargements of your 35mm slides right from your
home computer!

VIDEO
Although
VHS video tapes were very popular during the last two decades,
they are now being replaced rapidly with DVDs. The newer
technology provides unsurpassed quality in video and audio.
The audio on many Hollywood DVDs is usually encoded with
a 5.1 channnel audio track, making it sound as if you're
in the middle of all the action. Pick out your favorite
family VHS tapes and have GrafXpress convert them to DVD
now before the quality degrades any further. You will find
that our prices provide you with the best value over many
other studios.
